The Spinster's Union

I was checking if there is any more coverage of my new novel The Spinster's Vow when I came across this funny article from 1919.

It talks about single women should form a union to put the married ones in their place.

She played tennis though, she loathed exertion. She learnt to swim, though the surf terrified her...[all in the name of trying to catch a husband.]

I don't have any issue with married or single women but I wish the government will give single women like myself more bonus. It's not just family who need or want tax bennefit from the government.

Most stolen food in the world

Cheese is the most stolen food in the world, according to a new market research.

The UK's Center for Retail Research has found that the cheese and meat aisles are popular stops for thieves in grocery stores around the world with retailers reporting four per cent theft in cheese every year.

The 2011 study traces retail theft in 43 countries across more than 250,000 stores and reports that retailers suffered millions of dollars of losses in food products. - source yahoo.com.au

Hmm, why would people steal from supermarket?

What's in a name?

The birth of David Beckham and his wife Victoria's little daughter has been a big boost to the book industry after the soccer superstar revealed the tot was named after To Kill A Mockingbird author Harper Lee.

The couple welcomed its fourth child and long-awaited daughter Harper Seven earlier this month, leading to speculation over the choice of her name.

Is it that simple?

Late Bloomers

If you're in your 30s and still haven't written the great Australian novel or scored a Nobel Prize, have you left your run too late?

Fashion icon Vivienne Westwood is possibly the only woman in her 70s who can carry off leather and ruffles without a whiff of irony. The grande dame of the runway has never been shy in public. While other designers agonise over the right "muse" to front their labels, Westwood would happily star in her own couture campaigns.

Her passion for the irreverent means she has always attracted a legion of high-profile fans - the most conspicuous, perhaps, being Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, when the fashion-loving character donned Westwood's bridal gown on her (sadly disastrous) big day.

I consider myself a slow late bloomer, just reaching maybe 30% of my potential. Hehe.

Stereotype?

British actress Emma Watson is terrified of settling down in Los Angeles, because she couldn't stand obsessing about her looks and weight all the time. - extract from Sydney Morning Herald.

Burma deports Michelle Yeoh

I like Michelle Yeoh, even before she worked on the Bond movie. It's great to hear she will be playing pro-democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi, who is such an inspiration.

I hope the movie is a genuine portray of the events.

You can read more about Burmese government blacklisting Yeoh from here.

Would you marry for love or money?

Most women would marry for love over money - unless the man is unemployed, according to a new survey.

Three out of four women said they would not wed someone without a job, and 65 per cent would feel uncomfortable tying the knot if they themselves were jobless.

But more than 91 per cent of single women said they would marry for love over money.- extract from Sydney Morning Herald

Ah, there are still many Elizabeth Bennet in today's world...

What do you gain from tweeting about your child birth?

Exploiting one's personal life for economic gain (honestly it's not THAT economic), is frowned upon and while I appreciate there are those who DO utilise this devil’s creation - otherwise known as social media - for monetary gain, personally this is not my intention.

Nor do I believe it was the intention of Mary Wycherly when she tweeted about her birthing experience for all the world to read.

Too much information? Over share? Social media gone too far?

No, no, and none of the above.

If you don’t want to read about Mary’s beautiful birthing experience – then don’t.

Nor is it anyone’s place to judge Mary for having the tenacity or the multi-tasking ability to tweet and labour at the same time.

However, I appreciate there are some that might ask why. What might Mary gain from sharing such personal detail with the rest of the world? - extract from Sydney Morning Herald

Definitely not my cup of tea as reading material. But I think it will be helpful for some other would be moms.

Do you resent your husband?

Many US mothers feel like single parents, whether they are married or not, and two out of three resent handling all the household chores even when they prefer their partners to stand aside, a new survey shows.

The study by ForbesWoman and the pregnancy website TheBump.com found that 92 per cent of working mums and 89 per cent of stay-at-home mothers felt overwhelmed by work, home and parenting responsibilities. - extract from Sydney Morning Herald

Hmm, and then they feel resentful towards their partners. That's bad. Perhaps they should invoice their spouses for work done, then they may feel happier.

Who doesn't want to look like a dancer?

Who doesn't want to look like a dancer? Their lithe limbs, upright posture and washboard stomachs all give cause for envy. Not to mention their firm buttocks.

For so long, these dancers were an exclusive lot. Us lumbering two-left-footers were doomed to be spectators, forever in the role of passive, politely clapping audience at concerts with no possibility of ever joining in the sweaty, dancing fun. That's unless you count drunken bopping at parties, or private moments reprising the finale of Flashdance in front of the home mirror.

But all that has changed. If you ''gotta dance'', as old Hollywood toe-tapper Gene Kelly once sang, there's now a class to welcome you. Belly dancing, salsa, Zumba, jazz, hip-hop, swing, ballroom and even adult ballet have all flourished in the past decade.

- extract from Sydney Morning Herald

I actually didn't want to look like a dancer. But I love watching Dancing with the Stars. I wouldn't mind learning waltz and some boggie shaking numbers. It will be fun.

Your brain will tell you to eat more fatty foods

Eating fatty foods may injure neurons in an area of the brain that controls body weight, found researchers at the Diabetes and Obesity Center of Excellence at the University of Washington in Seattle.

"The possibility that brain injury may be a consequence of the overconsumption of a typical American diet offers a new explanation for why sustained weight loss is so difficult for most obese individuals to achieve," said presenting author Joshua Thaler. - extract from SMH

Oh oh, no wonder I'm addicted to a certain brand of chips lately!

Did you get caught out today by April Fool jokes?

I was definitely fooled by this article in Daily Mail about the Kate Middleton behaving badly.

That should teach me for reading gossip.

Quirky Inventions

I love to watch and read about inventions, probably because of the sci-fi I've been reading throughout my teenage years. I'm still hopeful that one day I can be beamed to another planet in seconds.

It seems Aussie are quite good in inventions. A recent article in the newspaper said that it's worth $12 billion a year. It mentioned three inventions in the story. I don't quite understand how the kitten toilet seat works but the odourless underwear 4SKINS is a great invention! You can fart as much as you need to, without embarrassing yourself, LOL.

You can read the SMH article here. And the odourless men underwear is quite sexy too. Photo source from http://www.4SKINS.com.au

Popular baby names

It's time for baby names, not mine's, but the popular ones in UK.

It's news that could disappoint every Tom, Dick and Harry but Oliver has been named the UK's most popular baby name for a boy in 2009, according to official data.

The name, which beat out Jack, Alfie and Joshua for the title, was a lucky winner in itself.

The most common baby name was Mohammed, but no one seemed to work out what the exact spelling was.

There were 12 variations of Mohammed - each was listed separately - allowing Oliver to end Jack's 14-year reign as most popular name.

For the girls, Olivia retained the crown as most popular girls name, ahead of Ruby, Chloe, Emily and Sophie.

Austin was the biggest riser for boys, jumping from 160th in 2008 to 60th, while Maisie jumped 29 places to 34th to be the girl's fastest growing name.

Do you think Oliver's popularity due to much Charles Dickens?

What French people don't do?

I just read an interesting article in Sydney Morning Herald about French people don't like going to the gym.

"It appears to me that more people are sitting in cafes smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee than working out ... the French don't see fitness as a lifestyle," says American-born fitness consultant Fred Hoffman, who has lived in Paris for 21 years.

Only 5.4 per cent of French people belonged to a health club in 2008, according to the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association, compared with 9.5 per cent for Italy, 11.9 per cent for the United Kingdom and 16.6 per cent for Spain.

I agree. I prefer tennis and walking than work out in the gym. I like the fresh air and admiring the changing colours of the trees, flowers and sky. What's your preference for staying fit?

Emma Watson's escape

Emma Watson is news. So when she was evacuated from the dormitory in uni due to a fire alert, she made the news too. Her nighties looked quite lovely.

I had a similar experience once in Northern Ireland, at a hotel. I was working with some journalists and senior politicians at that time. It's kind of funny to see that they all escaped to the street with just a bathrobe or a towel around their waist while I was fully dressed, with my handbag over my shoulders.

You can read the full article about Emma here. Photo from smh as well.
